These were the dark years for men of Middle-earth, but the years of glory of Numenor. Of events in Middle-earth the records are few and brief, and their dates are often uncertain.

In the begining of this age many of the Eldar still remained. Most of these dwelt in Lindon west of the Ered Luin; but before the building of the Barad-dur many of the Sindar passed eastward, and some established realms in the forests far away, where their people were mostly the Avari (silvan elves). Thranduil (the Wood Elf King from the Hobbit) was king in the north of Greenwood the Great (later to become Mirkwood). In Lindon north of the Lune dwelt Gil-Galad, last of the Kings of the Noldor. He was acknowledged as High King of the Elves of the West. In Lindon south of the Lune dwelt for a time Celeborn, kinsman of Thingol (King of the Sindar Elves) and his wife Galadriel, greatest of Elven women (She was a kinsman of Gil-Galad and a Noldoran Elf).

Later some of the Noldor went to Eregion, upon the west of the Misty Mountains, and near the west gate of Moria. This they did because they learned that Mithril had been discovered in Moria. The Noldor were great craftsmen and less unfriendly to the Dwarves than the Sindar ; But the friendship that grew between the people of Durin and the Elven-smiths of Eregion was the closest that their has ever been between the two races. Celebrimbor was lord of Eregion and the greatest of their craftsmen; he was a decendant from the Noldoran King of Kings.

Sauron: Of old there was Sauron the Maia, whom the Sindar in Beleriand named Gorthaur. In the begining of the world Morgoth seduced him to his allegience, and he became the greatest and most trusted of the servents of the Enemy, and the most perilous, for he could assume many forms, and for long if he willed he could still appear noble and beautiful, so as to decieve all but the most wary.

When Thangorodrim was broken and Morgoth overthrown, Sauron put on his fair guise and bowed down to the Valar and abjured all his eveil deeds. And some hold that this was not at first falsely done, but that Sauron in truth repented, if only out of fear, being dismayed by the fall of Morgoth and the great wrath of the Lords of the West. He was commanded to return to the West and recieve the Judgement of the Valar. Then Sauron was ashamed, and he was unwilling to return in humiliation and to recieve from the Valar a sentence, it might be, of long servitude in proof of his good faith; for under Morgoth his power had been great. Therefore he hid himself in Middle-earth and he fell back to evil, for the bonds that Morgoth had laid upon him were very strong.
